More on Principles of Spiritual Activism

6. Shift our motivation from anger to love. This work for the world can be uplifting and energizing when done out of love. We need to be clear that we are doing it out of our love and compassion for life and not because we are angry or fearful or out of a sense of obligation. When we do things because we "should" or we act out of anger or fear, it contains heavy, negative energy which wears us out

7. Be aware of any negative thinking on our part. Be alert for fearful or angry images which arise in our consciousness. We have a choice. We can let negative thoughts rule us and our behavior or we can replace those thoughts with more positive images. Marianne Williamson says, "We have been given the power to transform the world, through our capacity to change how we think about the world." We can transform our consciousness by lifting our thoughts out of fear, anger, and negativity by affirming the highest God-given qualities and virtues for ourselves and others. Seek to be the highest expression of who we truly are.

8. Be willing to talk openly about love. This is not generally done in our culture. We need clasess and churches which will teach people how to love others. We need to move beyond individual, personal love to social love.

9. To promote peace, we must be peaceful ourselves. Meditating can help us develop peace and learn to live more in a state of love.

10. Develop a non-attachment to outcome. Buddhists believe this is the path out of suffering.

11. Let go of the need to be "right" and in control. Be open to all possibilities.

12. When involved in a dispute, focus on the issues rather than attacking the people involved.

13. We must not isolate ourselves from the pain and suffering in the world. As we let in the pain, we become transformed, compassionate and motivated to action.

14. God created life, and created us as beings capable of creative genius. We can co-create, with God, a better future.

15. Peaceful, non-violent direct action is an appropriate way to protest our harmful, unjust laws or practices.

16. We are all One with God, each other, and all life. In this oneness, may we love one another and be of service.
