Not since the spring of 2002 have the Lake Logan-Cecil and Cruso Volunteer Fire Departments gotten to together to set a house ablaze for training. The house itself was a turn of the century 2 story house with a metal roof, fireplace, and lots of wood. We spread bales of hay throughout the house to create hot spots, and added a little diesel fuel to speed things up. First few fires we practiced on were up stairs. We put the fires out, and then restarted them. We attacked with 1 1/2" hoses manned by three man fire teams. We would go in low, make an approach soak it with water, then egress. After everyone had a chance on the nozzle, we let it envelope the house and put some water on it from the outside.
Here is the Lake Logan pumper tanker 2801 and drop tank. Not seen, as it is behind the pumper tanker is a 10,000 gallon bladder, hooked up to the pumper tanker, which was in turn hooked up to the drop tank. This provided all the water used to fight the fires. Drop tank also doubles as a good way to cool off over heated fire fighters - we got out of our turn out gear and put it to the test.
We also made use of a back hoe to clean up the burning debris. The only thing left standing was the chimney. The back hoe basically sped up the burning after we were through with the exercise, by pushing material into the fire. In front of the back hoe is a young firefighter putting on her turnout gear. |
