main.nc.us and your-county.main.nc.us addresses
General settings for user@main.nc.us and user@your-county.main.nc.us addresses:

Incoming (POP3) mail server: main.nc.us or your-county.main.nc.us
Outgoing (SMTP) mail server: your-county.mtnarea.net

We recommend using a secure connection for all MAIN mail addresses!!!
When checking mail for a user@mtnarea.net, user@main.nc.us or user@your-county.main.nc.us address, your email program is sending your password across the Internet to our mail servers in plain text. MAIN therefore recommends that you enable the "secure connection (SSL)" option for your connection for the Incoming (POP3) mail server, using port 995 which will encrypt the password improving your security.

Instructions for Microsoft Mail and Outlook Express

  2. Double-click on your newly-created mail account to bring up the Properties window.
  3. Click on the Advanced tab.
  4. Under Incoming mail (POP3), check the box labeled This server requires a secure connection (SSL). Make sure that the Port number has changed to 995.Click OK at the bottom of windows until you get back to the Inbox.

If you are on other networks and want to send email using MAIN's servers:
This alternate mail server will allow you to send mail from your mail client regardless of how you are connected to the Internet (e.g. when dialed in or on another network), whereas the your-county.main.nc.us mail server will only allow you to send mail when connected to MAIN's wireless network. The drawback is that this server is not as local, and therefore will send mail more slowly but will allow you to send mail through other networks.
You would use as your outgoing (SMTP) mail server: smtp-auth.main.nc.us
This requires authentication using your full email address and password via port 2500 (not 25, the default).
