Setup Instructions for Windows

Upgrading your MAIN account, keeping the same email address:

  1. Download the "dialer" program to your computer. This program

    will identify the proper phone number for your computer to call from any location. Note that you should always verify that the number you receive is local to wherever you are calling from, because you are responsible for any toll calls. To download the dialer, click this link, save the program to your desktop. You should close any other running programs first, then go to the desktop (where all your icons are) and double-click to run it, then fill out the entries shown on-screen.

  2. If you are using Outlook Express, go to Tools-Accounts-Mail-Properties-Servers in that program and change the name of the Outgoing mail server to smtp.main.nc.us, then click the dot for "My server requires authentication". Click the OK button, then the Close button on the Internet Accounts page.
  3. Other email programs may have slightly different procedures. If you encounter difficulty, contact our Help Desk.

Upgrading your MAIN account, using a new IndyLink address:

  1. Click this link, save the setup

    program to your desktop, then go to the desktop (where all your icons are) and double-click to run it. You should close any other running programs first. When the program launches, follow the directions on your screen.

  2. Outlook Express and other email program users should not need to make any other changes. If, for some reason, your email program does not update contact our Help Desk.



Setup Instructions for Macintosh National Access

Upgrading your MAIN account, keeping the same email address:

Upgrading Instructions for Mac OS 8.6 - 9.X
Check for the national access number(s) you need:
National Access Numbers

1. Click on the Apple in the upper left hand corner,

then go to Control Panels, then Remote Access. Where it says "Name" add:
@indylink.org
after it. Example:
username@indylink.org

2. Then enter the Phone Number you found from the MAIN National Access database. Close the window and Save the changes (do not click Connect).

Upgrading Outlook Express (If you have another email client, call or email the HelpDesk):

1. Open Outlook Express, usually in the Applications folder, (sometimes labeled Applications Mac OS 9).

2. Click on the Tools menu and pull down to Accounts.

3. Doubleclick on the name of the account you want to change.

4. Where it says "SMTP server", delete what is there and put in:

smtp.main.nc.us

5. Click on: "Click here for advanced sending options".

6. Put a check in: "SMTP server requires authentication" and make sure a dot is "Use same settings as incoming mail server".

7. To close that window, click in the tiny box in the upper left corner. Then click OK on the Edit Account window and then close the Accounts window.

8. Congratulations! You are ready to access the Internet Nationally via MAIN, your community network.



Upgrade Instructions for Mac OS 10.2 and up
First, check for the national access number(s) you need:
National Access Numbers

1. Go to the Apple in the upper left hand corner of your screen, click on it and pull down to System Preferences. Doubleclick the Network icon. Make sure you have the PPP tab chosen.

2. After your Account Name (same as username)add:

@indylink.org
after it. Example:
username@indylink.org

3. Delete the current phone number and enter the Phone Number you found from the MAIN National Access database.

Click Apply Now (or Save) at the bottom of the window, close the Network window.


To Upgrade the Apple Mail Program

1. Open the Mail program. It is the Stamp icon in the Dock at the bottom of your screen or in the Applications folder it is Mail or Mail.app.

2. To modify the settings, go to the Mail menu, then click on Preferences. Make sure Accounts is chosen at the top.

3. Make sure the account you want to modify is highlighted in the left column.

4. Where Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) is on the lower right hand side, click on the current server name and then click on Add Server. For the name of the Outgoing Mail Server enter:

smtp.main.nc.us
For Authentication, change it to Password.

5. Click OK, then close the accounts window.

6. Congratulations! You are ready to access the Internet nationwide via MAIN!


To Upgrade Eudora 6.2

  • Open Eudora, click on Tools, go down and click on Options.
  • In the window that comes up, on the left hand side, make sure that you are scrolled all the way to the top of the column and click on Sending Mail.
  • On the right, for Sending Mail, enter:
    smtp.main.nc.us
    Check to allow authentication. For Secure Sockets When Sending, choose None.
  • Click OK.

Setup Instructions for Mac OS 10.1 - 10.2

First, check for the national access number(s) you need:
National Access Numbers

1. Go to the Apple in the upper left hand corner of your screen, click on it and pull down to System Preferences. Doubleclick the Network icon. Make sure you have the PPP tab chosen.

To Upgrade the Apple Mail Program

3. In the box in the middle of the window with your account listed, make sure it is highlighted. Then click on the Edit button.

4. Look for SMTP Host and change it to:

smtp.main.nc.us
Put a check in "Use authentication when sending mail". Put in your regular MAIN username and password below.

5. Click OK, then close the Mail Preferences window.

6. Congratulations! You are ready to access the Internet nationwide via MAIN!


To Upgrade Eudora 6.2

  • Open Eudora, click on Tools, go down and click on Options.
  • In the window that comes up, on the left hand side, make sure that you are scrolled all the way to the top of the column and click on Sending Mail.
  • On the right, for Sending Mail, enter:
    smtp.main.nc.us
    Check to allow authentication. For Secure Sockets When Sending, choose None.
  • Click OK.
