Stream Volunteers Needed!

18 Sep 2016

Join over 100 volunteers to help sample local streams for water quality! Learn to identify aquatic insects and why they are important indicators of healthy rivers and creeks. Volunteers will be trained in sampling methods for use in a long-term monitoring project at sites in Haywood, Madison, Buncombe, Yancey, and Mitchell Counties. Volunteering is open to persons 11th grade and older with any background or level of experience.  This training is only held twice a year. Come join us!

Volunteer Expectations:
Volunteers will work in small groups with leaders to sample a minimum of two sites a season. They will be responsible for sampling once in spring and once in the fall season (2-3 hrs per site). Be prepared to have fun and contribute to community science!

Data collected by volunteer groups is shared with NC DEQ (Department of Environmental Quality) for use in watershed management and planning. Volunteer monitoring groups can be a focal point for community interaction, promote a sense of stewardship of local waterways, and empower residents to protect the quality of our mountain rivers and streams. Information on the Stream Monitoring Information Exchange (SMIE) and instructional videos are available on The Environmental Quality Institute’s website: www.eqilab.org.
