Drinks and Conversation with Fred Edwords,

17 Apr 2016

You are invited to join us for drinks, light fare and conversation with Fred Edwords of the American Humanist Association at the Urban Orchard Cider Company in West Asheville, on Sunday April 17 at 5 PM. Fred is scheduled to speak earlier in the day for the Ethical Humanist Society of Asheville and the UU of Swannanoa Valley. Urban Orchard Cider Company (UrbanOrchardCider.com) is located at 210 Haywood Rd.

“The Promise of Humanism” will be presented by Fred Edwords at the Sunday, April 17 meeting of the Ethical Humanist Society of Asheville, 2:00-3:30 PM, at the Asheville Friends Meeting House, 227 Edgewood Road, Asheville, NC 28804. All are welcome!

What is the promise of humanism? What is its attraction? With the emergence in the early twentieth century, humanism offered a refreshing outlook with a this-worldly forthrightness, down-to-earth honesty, and social action focused on “doing good.” Join us as we explore what the promise of humanism offers to adherents and society.

Fred Edwords was executive director for the AHA, national director of the Coalition of Reason, first president of Camp Quest a summer camp for freethinking children, and board member of the International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) and the National Center for Science Education.

Edwords is currently director of planned giving for the Humanist Foundation of the AHA, an advisor to the Secular Student Alliance, and he serves on the Broader Social Impacts Committee of the Hall of Human Origins at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.
