Ethical Humanist Society of Asheville

15 May 2016

“GMOs: Benevolent or Malevolent?” will be presented by Patricia Grace at the Sunday, May 15th meeting of the Ethical Humanist Society of Asheville, 2:00-3:30 PM, at Asheville Friends Meeting House, 227 Edgewood Road, Asheville, NC. All are welcome to attend.

Is genetic modification of food a good thing or a bad thing? The answer most often lies in how you view the world and whom you ask based on personal beliefs and ideological bias. Do GMOs offer the promise of reducing hunger in the world? Do GMOs indenture Jeffersonian farmers to corporate masters? Does tampering with Mother Nature produce “Frankenfoods” inconsistent with a vision of the Garden of Eden and nature itself? No matter what your political or ideological view, we all have blind spots. Join us as we explore some of the issues, evidence and challenges regarding GMOs in our world. Come with an open mind.

Informal discussion and refreshments will follow the presentation.

Patricia Grace received her Master of Science in Agriculture from the University of Florida in 1997 and her Doctorate in Agricultural Education from Virginia Tech in 2011. She has been teaching sustainable agriculture, agricultural ethics, sustainable living and facilitating social change for 20 years.

The Ethical Humanist Society of Asheville is a non-theist alternative to traditional religion, a member of the American Ethical Union and an affiliate of the American Humanist Association. We endeavor to nurture the capacity and responsibility of human beings to act in their personal relationships and in the larger community to help create a better world. We are inspired by the ideal of working to create a more humane society, recognizing each person’s worth and dignity, and helping to bring out the best in him or her. We join together to assist each other in developing ethical ideas and ideals, to celebrate life’s joys, support each other through life’s crises, and to cultivate ethical behavior in our community.
