Zansa takes the stage at Isis this Halloween with a Celebration of Masks. While West Africa does not celebrate Halloween in the traditional sense, the evening is inspired by the Festival of Masks (FĂȘtes des Masques) that happens November 1st in Ivory Coast. There are many types of masked dances in Ivory Coast, and this festival brings different villages together to compete for best masked dance. Senufo masks, for example, feature animal and human elements in a single design. They are said to aid communication between living and dead ancestors, and are also used to pay homage to the spirit world. Wabele masks combine features from several different animals, including bull horns, wild boar tusks, and crocodile jaws. These masks hold symbols relating to important ancient legends about the origin of the world.

On October 31, 2014 Zansa invites you to wear a masked costume inspired by this theme of the spirit world, ancient legends, and human-animal amalgamations. Or simply put your best mask forward. There will be a BEST MASK CONTEST! Winner will receive a $50 bar tab from Isis Restaurant & Music Hall.
