Ethical Humanist Society of Asheville October Platform Meeting

19 Oct 2014

"My Journey from Minister to Humanist" will be presented by Calvin King, former Mennonite minister and human resource manager, at the Sunday October 19th meeting of the Ethical Humanist Society of Asheville, 2:00-3:30 pm at The Friends Meeting House located at 227 Edgewood Road (Asheville 28804, near UNCA). King will discuss his changing beliefs about the advocacy of prayer, the authority of the Bible, the sacrificial story of redemption, and the logic of science. Additionally he will share a timeline of the 13.8 billion year cosmic history and compress it into one year.

King received a B.A. degree in Social Science from Goshen College in Indiana and earned his Masters in Theology at the Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary. He acquired additional courses from the McCormick School of Theology in Chicago. After serving as pastor in two congregations in Kansas for a total of 30 years, he left the ministry and found employment in the business world as a human resource manager. He and his wife, Lois, retired to the Asheville area in 2003. King recently participated in a professionally made DVD , A Path Less Taken , which describes the journey of four ministers who left the church ministry because of their non-belief in God. He is presently a member of the American Humanist Association.

Following King’s presentation there will be time for questions and group discussion. Following the meeting, informal conversation and light refreshments will be available. All are welcome!
