A Win - Win Proposal to Save the Old Coggins Farm

9 Jan 2014

Ian Booth, Director of the non-profit Sustainable Now, has lived on the Old Coggins Farm since 2004. He will take you inside his personal story as he explains why development is not the only outcome that is being proposed for the farm. It is also the centerpiece of a program designed to establish Buncombe County as a "Sustainability Capital." That is - a regional hub where thought leaders and others convene to learn the techniques and the technology of creating truly sustainable community. This pristine historic family farm is ideally suited for this purpose. As a farmland conservancy and innovation hub, it would house a "living laboratory" to research, refine and teach the techniques of resource friendly living.

Booth will look at a Harvard Graduate School policy analysis called the "Gaia Verde Strategy," written by Asheville native, Lalita Booth. He will compare some of its ideas to the proposed development by Case Enterprises that is now being considered by county officials. We think you'll enjoy hearing Booth's positive and doable proposal for a win-win outcome as we look at public policy, environmental impact, highest and best use, old and new funding strategies, social entrepreneurship and more ... all in the name of creating a truly sustainable future in Buncombe County.
