Spoon River Anthology - Readers Theatre
14 Jun 2013 - 16 Jun 2013
The Autumn Players of the Asheville Community Theatre (ACT) will present Spoon River Anthology in three matinee performances Friday through Sunday, June 14–16. A drama adopted for the stage by Charles Aidman from poetry by Edgar Lee Masters, the show features a collection of epitaphs spoken by characters in a small town in Illinois after they have died.
Based on Edgar’s 1915 work, the show originally premiered onstage at the Booth Theatre on Broadway in 1963 and was hailed by the New York Post as "a dramatic presentation reduced to its simplest terms... moving and beautiful ... An evening of astonishingly stirring emotional satisfaction."
These unconventional narratives—some bold, some ordinary—are interspersed with folk music and depict the steadfast and humorous truths of early 19th century small town American life. Directed by playwright, actor, author, and storyteller RoseLynn Katz, the show will be performed by Asheville Community Theatre’s volunteer outreach company, The Autumn Players, in partnership with Osher Lifelong Learning Institute as part of the 2012-2013 Readers Theatre Showcase.
