"Floral Attraction and the Wine-Red Flower Guild"

11 Oct 2012

Why does a rotting-fruit smell attract pollinators? Find out Oct. 11 at a presentation titled, “Floral Attraction and the Wine-Red Flower Guild,” by Amy Boyd, Ph.D., chair of the Warren Wilson College biology department. Her presentation, free and open to the public, begins at 7 p.m. in Room 210 of the Morse Building at Warren Wilson.

Boyd’s talk will be given at the October meeting of the UNC-Asheville Chapter of Sigma Xi – The Scientific Research Society.

Boyd and her research colleagues study plants with foul-smelling red flowers that bloom in early spring in the Southeast. The plants are intriguing because they appear to be sending the same floral message to pollinators.
