Tear gas used, 4 arrested, vehicle drove through protesters in Sunday's Asheville protest

UPDATE - 3:50 P.M. Asheville Police Chief David Zack provided an update from Sunday's protest in Ashevile during the press conference.

After providing a timeline of events, Zack said many instances were peaceful, but he says when authorities found the situation necessary, tear gas was used on protesters.

Prior to the briefing, no injuries had been reported, but he said he is aware of a vehicle that drove through protesters at one point during the evening.

Zack confirmed four people were arrested during the events, as well.

  • Cori Antonio Floyd, 29, of Asheville, failure to disperse on command
  • Anthony Pacer John, 32, of Asheville, assault on a government official, failure to disperse on command, resisting public officer
  • Michael Fox Dean, 24, of Arden, assault on a government official, failure to disperse on command, resisting public officer
  • Raphael Demetrius Morales Jr., 30, of Asheville, failure to disperse on command, impede traffic sit/stand/lie

Zack said he expects another protest to happen Monday, June 1.

For now, the dust seems to have settled from an Asheville protest that started earlier Sunday evening and ended around 2:30 a.m. Monday morning.

UPDATE - 12 P.M. City officials plan to hold a news conference addressing Sunday's protest at 3:30 p.m. News 13 will be streaming the event here.

UPDATE - 8 A.M. - The Asheville Fire Department sprayed down downtown streets, cleaning up remains from Sunday's protest.

UPDATE - 6:30 A.M. - The protest started at Vance Memorial on May 31 around 6 p.m., moved onto several parts of the interstate, then back into downtown where it eventually broke apart, seemingly after police officers knelt down in front of demonstrators.

No injuries have been reported as of Monday morning. However, there was tear gas dispersed into crowds at some point. Fireworks were set off by some protesters as well.

Officials confirm at least one person was arrested after throwing some type of liquid item into the air.

Remains from the protest downtown include water bottles, milk cartons, signs and memorials for George Floyd, and some faint, lingering tear gas.

When a News 13 crew arrived downtown around 3:30 a.m. Monday morning, public works crews were cleaning up the aftermath of the protest, sweeping the streets.

It appears there was no looting or property damage and there have been no reports of such, as of Monday morning.
