Juvenile detained after student wounded in Hendersonville Middle shooting

A 12-year-old Hendersonville Middle School student who was struck during a shooting in the school gymnasium Tuesday morning is in stable condition. The alleged shooter was taken into custody.

In a joint press release from the Henderson County Public Schools and Hendersonville Police Department officials said on Tuesday, Nov. 24, at approximately 7:45 a.m. the Hendersonville Police Department responded to an incident involving a firearm on the campus of Hendersonville Middle School. Officers arrived to find a juvenile suspect had been immediately detained by a school and the weapon was secured.

ONE CHARGED AFTER MAN STABBED MULTIPLE TIMES IN THE THROAT AND NECK

A 12-year-old student was struck in the leg and transported by ambulance to Mission Hospital for treatment. The hospital reports that the student is in stable condition at this time.

"Our patient from the event at Hendersonville Middle School is in good, stable condition and resting comfortably. Her family requests privacy at this time. Thank you," said Mission Hospital spokesperson, Nancy Lindell.

At an 11:30 a.m. press conference, authorities confirmed all students had been removed from the school and were safe.

Authorities say the suspect, also 12-years-old, and his parents are currently at the Hendersonville Police Department while the investigation continues.

Timeline

Authorities were alerted to an incident involving a firearm on campus at 7:45 a.m. The Hendersonville Police Department reports that the SRO and responding officers were on scene within the first minute of the notification.

Henderson County Public School administrators immediately initiated a Code Red lockdown to secure the school campus, which was quickly downgraded to a Code Yellow once the student suspect was detained and the scene was secured.

The twelve-year-old student who was struck in the leg was transported by ambulance to Mission Hospital.

The firearm and the student suspect were transported to the custody of the Hendersonville Police Department.

Authorities are no identifying the firearm at this time saying the investigation is still, “ongoing at this time with our investigators and with the witnesses here at the school.”

Authorities say there was just one shot fired inside the gymnasium where approximately 35 people were.

Authorities say after the shot was fired, the juvenile suspect put his hands on top of his head and was taken into custody.
