Peace Day Highlights
1985 - an eduational program
to raise community awareness prior to the visit of three Soviet women in
the first national citizen diplomacy exchange. Activities included a "Friendship
Concert."
1986 - "Kids Speak Their Peace" featured Dr. Benjamin
Spock. Local school children shared their artistic, musical and writing
talents with projects created through an educational peace curriculum.
1988
- enouraged high school and college student voter registration with
a free "Rock 'n' Register" concert. 1989 - 2000 people watched area
youth perform in "Peace Child," a nationally acclaimed musical production.
1991 - "Lightfest," a paper lantern project with area schools, culminating
in the floating of lit lanterns in a downtown fountain. Lanterns were then
exchanged with Soviet schools.
1992 - Betty Bumpers, Peace Links
founder, and Harvey Gantt, former Charlotte mayor, led an area "Conflict
Resolution Symposium." 1993 - "Bridging Our Differences," a panel
discussion featuring noted Russian author and journalist, Vladimir Pozner.
1994
- "The Crossing Bridges Concert," with folksinger and storyteller David
Holt, the Russian bluegrass band Kukuruza and the Polish gospel group The
Roaring Twenties.
1995 - A celebration of peacemakers to introduce
"The Peace Pledge Project." 1996 - "A Day of Remembrance," part
of the YWCA's "Week Without Violence" with a worship service that moved
into an area full of of displays on violence prevention, conflict resolution
and empowerment.
