Often in large colonies, a welcome spring sight.

FAMILY:
Lily Family (Liliaceae)

DESCRIPTION:
Two wide mottled leaves (in brown and green) surround the base of a stalk that bears a solitary nodding yellow flower with recurved petals and petal-like sepals. The leaves are 2 - 8" long and elliptic. The plant grows 4 - 10" tall.

FLOWERS:
March to May

HABITAT:
Rich woodlands and meadows.

OTHER INFORMATION:
The name "Dogtooth Violet" is a reference to the bulb shape, and is a misnomer because the flower is not related to the violets.

The leaves, in their mottling, look similar to the markings of the brook or brown trout.

This plant can achieve sizable colonies.
