A strange scaly-looking plant.

FAMILY:
Broomrape Family (Orobanchaceae)

DESCRIPTION:
The thick, yellow to brown stalks with whitish-yellow flowers of this non-green parasitic plant grow in little colonies and look like erect pine-cones. It has no leaves and grows 2 - 8" tall.

FLOWERS:
April to July

HABITAT:
Prefers dry woods, generally under oak trees (where it primarily feeds on the roots)

OTHER INFORMATION:
This plant turns deep brown after maturing. I mean like DEEP brown. It also just rots in large stands looking like some strange collection of burnt pine-cones.
