A showy member of
the Pink (Caryophyllaceae) Family.
FAMILY: Pink Family (Caryophyllaceae)
DESCRIPTION: 1" - 2" bright red flowers atop a long
dark stem. 5-petaled with deeply cleft ends. The
sepals are united into a long sticky tube. The
lanceolate leaves are opposite. The plants stand,
sometimes lazily, from 6" to 2'.
FLOWERS: April to August (Though i've seen
scattered blooms as late as October up on the
mountains)
HABITAT: The edge of open woods, thickets, rocky
and sandy slopes.
OTHER INFORMATION: The other name, Catchfly, refers to the
sticky hollow tube that sometimes entraps flies and
other smaller insects in the flower.
