I gathered rich dirt, small pea gravel from a streambed, a few plants (Christmas fern, rattlesnake plantain), some larger rocks. I tried to buy charcoal, but neither the pet store nor the plant store had them. So i bought charcoal briquettes (making sure it wasn't the 'light easy' kind that have been soaked in flammable liquid).
