SPEED

Travelling in a car may not be in nature (despite your top down or on a motorcycle), but at least it's close. Viewing nature at 45 MPH is just that... what nature looks like at 45 MPH.

A drive, like a hike is not a destination, but a way of being... a process of enlightenment.

THE BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY

This is the obvious scenic drive in the area. And i'm not going to detail here what has been described more eloquently elsewhere. Here are some links to the best drive in the area.

NC Natural's Blue Ridge Parkway Information has quite a bit of information about the history, a trail list and major destinations along this beautiful road. Also includes a photo gallery and a mile-by-mile travelogue. Endangered species and mountain herbal remedies are also discussed.

The Blue Ridge Parkway Association has maps, broken down into sections, a bloom schedule along with the positions of some of these plants, and information on regulations, fishing, bicycling and other official positions. In other ways it's not as detailed as the previous site.

The National Park Service (NPS) site for the Blue Ridge Parkway. This site has a lot of thought-provoking information about everything from cultural events to geology, from plant identification to wilderness resource management.

The Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation has a few maps of various trails on or near the parkway, and other information.

DRIVE INDEX

The drives listed below are really expanded notebook notes; they just have a beginning and an end. Unlike my constant rambling. Not to mention sentence fragments.

Even though i'd much rather hike, there's times (like visiting relatives) when a good drive thru the beauty is an overall view itself.
