There is always something to do in Henderson County.  Like visiting Downtown Hendersonville- where there is almost always something going on or traveling to Gerton to get away from busy city life.

Below are some of the wonderful historic sites to see while in Henderson County.  Where possible, contact information has been provided so you may ask for directions to these exciting places to go!

Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site - Flat Rock, NC.

Residence of Carl Sandburg, American poet, historical author and lecturer spent 22 productive years  - from the end of WWII until his death in 1967 - at his estate, Connemara.  Today, this National Historic Site reveals the inner life of Carl Sandburg and the lives of his family on this 240 acre working farm.  The home, constructed in 1838, houses his personal collection of over 10,00 books, hand-written notes and papers.  There is a staffed visitor center and guided tours are available.

Daily tours are offered (closed only on Christmas Day) and the grounds, though extensive, are primarily wooded.  There are two popular hiking trails: one to Little Glassy Mountain ("beginner" challenge) and the other to Big Glassy Mountain (a medium challenge - great view)

Flat Rock Playhouse (The State Theatre of North Carolina) - Flat Rock, NC

Considered one of the ten best seasonal theatres in the country, Flat Rock Playhouse has presented productions for nearly fifty years.  A wonderful escape from "the busy life" the Playhouse offers quality entertainment rarely found so far from Broadway.  The Vagabond Players perform a variety of hits each summer- comedy, American classics, musicals, farces, and "whodunits".  The Playhouse is open from late-May through mid-October presenting matinees and evening performances Wednesday through Sunday.

St John in the Wilderness Church - Flat Rock, NC

Listed on the National Register of Historic Sites, this beautiful Episcopal Church offers a unique perspective of prominent families in southern and national history.  St John in the Wilderness was built as a private chapel in 1833, on the grounds of Charles and Susan Barrings' home, Mountain Lodge.  The church was deeded to the Episcopal Diocese of WNC in 1936.

Many well-known members of southern aristocracy have family plots in the churchyard, including members of the families of three signers of the Declaration of Independence.  The church and graveyard and open daily from 9am - 4pm for visitation.  The church is located on Hwy 25 South in Flat Rock, NC.

Johnson Farm - Hendersonville NC. A fine example of a late 19th and 20th Century farm & tourist retreat. A great lasting, typical mountain farm where students can explore their heritage.  More Info: 828-891-6585.

Wolfe's Angel - Hendersonville,  NC. Author Thomas Wolfe's father carved this magnificent angel for a Johnson family plot located in Oakdale Cemetery.  Made of Italian Marble this angel was a constant reference in Wolfe's "Look Homeward, Angel". Located on US-64, a short distance from Downtown Hendersonville.
