Henderson County's rich history can be traced back as far as the early eighteenth century when it was settled by William Mills, and his wife Eleanor, in the Fruitland area where they reared a family of seven children.  William Mills became the father of the county apple industry, forerunner of the multimillion dollar production today on 640 acres of land granted to him by North Carolina.  The Mills River Valley and Mills Gap areas bear his name.

Incorporated in 1838, Henderson County was named for Judge Leonard Henderson of eastern North Carolina.  Judge Mitchell King donated the land for the county seat, Hendersonville, which was incorporated in 1847.

Before "incorporation" - in the early 1800's - the Hendersonville/Flat Rock area was a very popular summer resort where many wealthy South Carolina planters and dwellers came to escape the intense heat, insects and diseases of the Low Country.  The tradition of a popular summer community continues today with many of the beautiful historic homes restored and still in use.  Because of these wonderfully historic homes - and Hendersonville's historic heritage - downtown Hendersonville was registered in March of 1988 into the National Register of Historic Places.

The serpentine street of Downtown Hendersonville feature planter boxes brimming with seasonal flowers, trees and thriving businesses such as: specialty shops, antique shops, art galleries, restaurants, and plays host to many yearly activities including the North Carolina Apple Festival, held during Labor Day weekend.

Eight townships comprise Henderson County:  Hendersonville, Blue Ridge, Green River, Edneyville, Mills River, Hooper's Creek, Crab Creek and Clear Creek. Two other incorporated areas within the county are the towns of Laurel Park and Fletcher.  A series of outlying communities also exist as rural centers of commerce.  These communities include: Etowah, Horse Shoe, Mills River, Edneyville, East Flat Rock, Gerton, Bat Cave, Dana, Naples, Mountain Home, Flat Rock and Tuxedo.
