Mt. Jefferson as seen from Jefferson, NC - See It on a Topo Map

Ashe County is just a stone's throw from Virginia and Tennessee, an easy drive up from Charlotte, and a great escape for the flatlanders down past Winston, Greensboro and Raleigh.  Even us Appalachian diaspora of Washington and Baltimore make a point of coming home to the mountains on a regular basis.

"I'm not generally in the business of recommending books, but I picked up this travel guide as I was planning my vacation, and I was so surprised when my expectations of this type of travel guide were surpassed by the writer of this guide!  Never have I seen such a feel for the history, tidbits of quirky info, the music and people of my little postage stamp of appalachia come from a travel guide!

Ms. Turnage obviously has visited the mountains and spent some time getting to know them, unlike most other guides that gloss over our area because they've never been there!

Mr. Hargan's photos sparkle and pull you in...

I highly recommend this book - even to native North Carolinians!  What a find!"
