Broadcast/Webcast of North Carolinian’s Cantata, and Other Music by Harold Schiffman

Long-time MAIN subscriber Harold Schiffman’s cantata Alma will be broadcast/webcast on Sunday, September 18, at 8:00 p.m. EDT.  Schiffman, a native of Greensboro, NC, and a part-time resident of Robbinsville, NC, is Professor Emeritus of Composition in the College of Music, The Florida State University.

The main composition on Sunday, Sept. 18 is a delayed broadcast/webcast of the world première of Schiffman's cantata Alma (for mezzo-soprano, chorus, and orchestra).  The text for Alma is taken almost entirely from North Carolina Poet Laureate Kathryn Stripling Byer's prize-winning Wildwood Flower, with additional excerpts from the Old Testament's Book of Job and Song of SolomonAlma premièred April 15, 2005, in Opperman Music Hall, The Florida State University, and performed by: Nadine Whitney, mezzo-soprano; The University Singers; The University Philharmonia; Alexander Jiménez, conductor.  This performance will be heard on Sunday Sept. 18.

Other compositions by Harold Schiffman will also be heard on the broadcast/webcast, as well as an interview with Dr. Schiffman conducted by the program’s host Deborah Olander.
