Re: Kiwanis Terrific Kids Program
Our telephone conversation today

Dear Mr. Rice,

Thank you for returning my call and for your interest in ourconcerns about the unintended negative impacts of the KiwanisTerrific Kids program.

As we discussed, I learned yesterday that the Black MountainKiwanis Club had sent on to you our group's July 31, 1996 letterand our response to the Terrific Kids Task Force Report. You hadnot received them when we talked but I hope you have by now. Weare enclosing a copy just in case.

Also enclosed in this letter are some additional backgroundmaterials that I hope will be useful as Kiwanis Internationalassesses the situation. Those materials include:

  1. The concerned parents original letter dated September 30, 1995 outlining our concerns about the TK program. Attachedto that letter is a four page article entitled: "The Terrific KidProgram: Just How Terrific? No One Really Knows." Attached to thearticle are letters from parents sharing their own personalexperiences.
  2. The letter Black Mountain Kiwanis sent out to localschool parents explaining that Kiwanis would be setting up theTask Force. And a list of the Task Force members.
  3. A copy of the Kind Caring Kids program proposal that wasincluded in the Black Mountain Kiwanis TK Task Force Report. This copy has been re-done a bit and is easier to read. Ourgroup has not endorsed this program yet, but we have indicatedour willingness to participate in a pilot program for a year.
Our July 31, 1996 letter outlines our conclusions andrecommendations which I call to your attention but will notrepeat here. With school beginning over the next few weeks inBlack Mountain and across the country, we request that KiwanisInternational let us know as quickly as possible its assessmentof the situation and any actions the organization may be decideto take.

Also, as I said when we talked this morning, please do nothesitate to get in touch with me if you want any clarificationson the enclosed materials or have any questions that we couldanswer. Thank you for your concern and we hope to stay in touchwith you.

Sincerely

Monroe Gilmour
