List of
North Carolina Public Schools
Using American
Indian Mascots
(updated June 1, 2010)
33 Total Schools: 13 Warriors, 7 Indians, 6 Braves, 2 Redskins, 2 Chiefs,
2 Red Raiders, 1 Mighty Sauras. This list began with
73 schools several years ago. 55% or 40 schools have already chosen to retire their
"Indian"mascots. All 73 schools are listed with those having CHANGED
so marked.
Background: In June 2002, the N.C. State Board of Education issued
an 'action statement' that called on all educators
and schools in North Carolina to"educate themselves on the educational, curricular,
and psychological effects of using American Indian sport mascots and logos, and that all
public school administrators review their policies and procedures toward the use of American
Indian sport mascots, logos and all demeaning imagery."
In the past few years, 55% of NC's public schools with American Indian mascots
and logos have eliminated them. Many others are re-examing their use as directed by the
State Board of Education. Our congratulations to those schools and schools systems that
have responded, as noted in this list. If you have questions about these or other schools
in the N.C. system, you may also utilize the
N.C. Dept. of Public
Instruction's state-wide schools list.
Please contact us should you find
any errors in the two lists below or if you know of any changes in the status of mascot-usage in the
schools listed. Thank you.
Schools with "Indian" mascots are listed twice, first alphabetically by County/LEA (LEA means
"Local Education Agency"), then alphabetically by
individual school. This second alphabetical list also includes schools that have retired their "Indian" mascots.
Note that each school's information, the Principal's email, & school's
web sites can be found in the alphabetical listing.
