Background: In June 2002, the N.C. State Board of Education issued an 'action statement' that called on all educators and schools in North Carolina to"educate themselves on the educational, curricular, and psychological effects of using American Indian sport mascots and logos, and that all public school administrators review their policies and procedures toward the use of American Indian sport mascots, logos and all demeaning imagery."
        In the past few years, 55% of NC's public schools with American Indian mascots and logos have eliminated them. Many others are re-examing their use as directed by the State Board of Education. Our congratulations to those schools and schools systems that have responded, as noted in this list.
