Community Resolution Of Respect for

American Indian Culture

(By eliminating American Indian public school mascots & motifs)

Whereas, Asheville's All-American community is committed to  respecting the vibrant variety of cultures making up our citizenry;

Whereas, the Buncombe County School Board's Non Discrimination Policy obligates its staff to "establish and maintain an  atmosphere"  that  has "respect for cultural differences" and for "removing any vestige of prejudice and discrimination";

Whereas, many parents, teachers, students, and other community organizations have joined the Buncombe County Native  American Intertribal Association's request that American  Indian mascots and motifs be eliminated from Buncombe County  Public Schools;

Whereas over 115 colleges and universities throughout the United States and many secondary schools systems including those of Dallas, TX and Los Angeles, CA have respected American Indian culture by eliminating Indian mascots and motifs;

Therefore, we do conclude and resolve that it is the right thing to do and in the public interest of Asheville and Buncombe County for the Buncombe County Public Schools to eliminate American Indian  mascots and motifs now and in the future.

        "American Indians are a living people NOT mascots"
