Gay discrimination will one day go way of Jim Crow

Back in the 1960s, Christian segregationists used the Bible to defend the worst abuses of Jim Crow culture and laws. Now, that same design is being used by some similarly misguided Christians to discriminate against our gay and lesbian neighbors and family members. Reading those Christians’ loveless, fearful full-page ad in the Thursday AC-T, I take comfort in reflecting on civil rights history and the knowledge that over time and with different Christian and other faith and community voices speaking out, employment discrimination against gay and lesbian citizens will go the way of Jim Crow and be outlawed. And, perhaps, as with many former segregationists, even some of those who signed that ad will have a change of heart.
