Welcome to Rocky Knob!

Rocky Knob was originally created in the 1940's to be a fishing lake. The pond above the main lake was the breeding pond where the fish were raised until they reached a sustainable size and then released into the main lake. The lake is currently home to large mouth bass, bluegills, crappie and the occasional yellow perch and rainbow trout. Some sizable bass have been caught in the lake.

Several years ago the development was designated an Audubon Bird Sanctuary. Osprey, wood ducks, blue and green heron, owls, pileated woodpeckers, finch of all types, warblers, grosbeaks are just a few of the bird species found here. There is an active chapter of the Audubon Society in the area; it can be reached at www.highlandsaudubonsociety.org.

There are several nice hiking trails in and around Rocky Knob. The easiest and most accessible is Turkey Trail which serves to link the two ends of the roads around the lake for hiking. It is easy to find, just follow either end of the road (Lakeside or Rocky Knob Lane) to the end and look for the trail leading off the end. Shortly off the end of Rocky Knob Lane (before you get to the top of Turkey Trail) is David's Trail leading up to the top of Rocky Knob (a bit steep in parts). There is also another trail up Rocky Knob from Osage Estates. Just follow the road into Osage from the intersection of Lakeside and Rocky Knob and keep bearing right. The road becomes an old logging road. The trail to the top is off of this road to your right, or if you keep going going on the logging road you can walk all the way around the base of Rocky Knob, a nice hike with minimal elevation change, marked with Red Fox signs.  (You can walk around in the other direction by turning right instead of left at the top of Turkey Trail.)  When you get to the top of Rocky Knob, be sure to follow the trail off to the east, where you will find another rock outcropping with a spectacular view of Blue Valley.

The Bartram Trail is also accessible through Rocky Knob from Osage Drive at the pond end of the road. Maps of the entire Bartram Trail are available for purchase from Dean Zuch and Virginia Talbot.  Day hikes on the Bartram from Rocky Knob include Scaly Mountain to the north and Rabun Bald to the south.  A nice (but steep!) trail over Osage Mountain is also accessible from the Bartram Trail access trail; it connects back to the western end of Osage Drive.
