RALEIGH — Upon the nomination of state Sen. Chuck Edwards, Jeanette Butterworth has been appointed to the N.C. Charter School Advisory Board by the N.C. General Assembly.

House Bill 1111, which passed both chambers unanimously, confirmed her appointment.

“Jeanette Butterworth is an excellent addition to the N.C. Charter School Advisory Board,” Edwards said in a news release. “Not only is she actively involved in the community and within a charter school, as a parent of students attending these schools, she is well versed in the daily life and culture of charter schools.

"Additionally, she has volunteered with the school in various positions and understands the needs associated with charter schools. It is important that our district is represented on state boards and commissions. I know Jeanette will work hard for our students and represent District 48 well.”

Butterworth is a senior consultant with WNC Nonprofit Pathways. She has over 18 years of nonprofit experience including management, development, grant writing, board service and strategic consulting.

She has served on the staff and boards of both large and small organizations, and for established as well as fledgling nonprofits.

Butterworth has served on the Board of Directors for Mountain Community School in Hendersonville for four years (over two terms), and has been a parent at the school for nine years, with two children enrolled.

She has served in various volunteer positions for TMCS and functioned as development associate for one and a half years.

The Charter Schools Advisory Board works to ensure the existence of high quality charter schools in North Carolina.

The board shall have the following duties:

To make recommendations to the State Board of Education on the adoption of rules regarding all aspects of charter school operation, including time lines, standards, and criteria for acceptance and approval of applications, monitoring of charter schools and grounds for revocation of charters.

To review applications and make recommendations to the State Board for final approval of charter applications.

To make recommendations to the State Board on actions regarding a charter school, including renewals of charters, nonrenewals of charters, and revocations of charters.

To undertake any other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the State Board.
