New Asheville City Council members to be sworn in; will choose Vice Mayor

Three new City Council members will take the oath of office in Council chambers on the second floor of City Hall on Dec. 1 at 4 p.m.

Following a welcome from Mayor Esther Manheimer, the Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) of Asheville High School will lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Asheville Senior Firefighter Bentley Andrews will sing the National Anthem.

Buncombe County Chief District Court Judge the Honorable J. Calvin Hill will swear in Brian Haynes, Julie Mayfield and Keith Young.

The new Council members will join Manheimer, Cecil Bothwell, Gordon Smith and Gwen Wisler in electing a Vice Mayor.

Mayor Manheimer will present an address, and Council members will deliver remarks.

Council’s next regular meeting will be held on Dec. 8 at 5 p.m. in Council chambers at City Hall. According to City Clerk Maggie Burleson, Council will hear public comment on the following topics (which are subject to change):

  • Amendment to a previously approved conditional zoning at 671 Sand Hill Road to add a two-story, 8,000 square foot building for an established private school.
  • Permanent closure of an unnamed alley off Jarrett Road.
  • Conditional use permit for the co-location of wireless telecommunications equipment on the existing concealed telecommunication support structure located at 300 Merrimon Avenue.
  • Conditional zoning of two parcels totaling .61 acre located at One West Pack Square and 11 Patton Avenue (known as the BB&T Building) from Central Business District to Central Business District/Conditional Zoning and review of site plans for the renovation of an existing 201,000 square foot building along with a proposed 35,300 square foot parking structure and other site improvements for the development of a mixed-use project including a hotel and support functions, 39 condominium units and commercial spaces.
