Economic Development Coalition to unveil next job creation plan at Metro Economy Outlook

Bruce Katz, policy adviser on economic and urban development at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C., will be the keynote speaker at this year's Asheville Metro Economy Outlook, on Sept. 17.

On Thursday, Sept. 17, at the 16th annual Asheville Metro Economy Outlook, the Economic Development Coalition for Asheville Buncombe County will present their next iteration of the AVL 5×5 initiative, the EDC’s job creation strategy.

This next step, Vision 2020, will be presented at 5:30 p.m. along with the insights of keynote speaker Bruce Katz, an internationally-renowned policy adviser on economic and urban development at the Brookings Institute in Washington, D.C.

Katz will present his findings on thriving metropolitan areas, including building a more productive, resilient economy and the growth of urban innovation districts.

“Bruce Katz’s work is timely and relevant to our region’s economic development efforts and our goal of growing higher-wage jobs,” said Heidi Reiber, director of research for the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce and EDC, in a press release. “His insightful research points to cities that are leading the charge in attracting many high-wage jobs in innovation-centric industries.”

As for the newest 5×5 campaign, the EDC writes that this plan “is an evolution of the first five years, which far surpassed the community’s goals of attracting and growing higher wage jobs and capital investment.”

From 2010 to 2015, the AVL 5×5 initiative brought in $1 billion in capital investment and 6,385 jobs.

“Asheville’s AVL 5×5: Vision 2020 is a testament to the power of collaboration between public, private and civic leaders,” Katz remarked in the press release. “It is a step toward a more vibrant metropolitan economy that can compete in the 21st century marketplace and create good jobs for the residents of the Asheville region.”

The Metro Economy Outlook takes place on Thursday, Sept. 17, at the Biltmore Estate, beginning with a networking session at 4:45 p.m. The official program, running from 5:30-7 p.m., costs $20 for Asheville Chamber members, $25 for the public and is free for students. To attend the event, register here.

Tax revenue to the private sector to do the uplifting that’s government’s brief. Sounds legit.
