Buncombe County commissioners approve sale of property worth nearly $1 million

COUNTY CASH: Buncombe County Commissioners approved the sale of a 2.08-acre piece of land located at 32 Compton Drive that is currently owned by the county. The property has been valued at $915,000.

During a brief meeting, the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution to sell the property at 32 Compton Drive, off New Leicester Highway, in West Asheville. The county will begin accepting bids effective immediately and will not sell the property for less than $915,001.

County Manager Wanda Greene told commissioners the county has already received inquiries about the property. However, she noted it would probably be next year before the sale could be finalized, but it could still help with the potential shortfall county commissioners are facing with the proposed fiscal year 2016-17 budget.

The parcel for sale is 2.08 acres with an existing 8,302 square-foot building that used to house the Buncombe County Community Child Care Center.

There were no new business items or public hearings on the agenda. In addition to approving the consent agenda, commissioners unanimously approved four proclamations and made two board appointments.

The Board approved the following:

Proclamation of UNC-Asheville Bulldog Basketball Champions

Proclamation of Older American Month

Proclamation of Motorcycle Awareness Month

Proclamation of Foster Care Month

The Board approved the following appointments:

• reappointed Vonna Cloninger to the WNC Air Quality Board, and

• reappointed Jeff Austin to the Barnardsville Fire Department Relief Fund.

The Buncombe County Board of Commissioners’ next meeting is scheduled for May 31.
