RALEIGH, N.C. — The National Weather Service announced that we did reach 94 degrees Wednesday at RDU, which tied the record high set back in 2019!

Temperatures will continue to be in the 90s Thursday and Friday before dropping heading into the weekend. At 4:30 a.m., it was already warmer this morning than it was at the same time yesterday. We'll be a couple degrees cooler this afternoon, but it'll still feel hot!

More 90s

"It'll be 92 today and 94 tomorrow," said WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said. "It's a pretty morning out there, but it's really warm."

Cool at the pool

We'll see mostly clear skies through Thursday morning with a few more clouds popping up this afternoon. Like Wednesday, some isolated thunderstorms will pop up so don't be surprised if one shows up in your area.

The good news is relief is coming soon in the form of a cold front will arrive on Saturday.

Temperatures will swing up and down in the coming days and we'll see a mix of sun, clouds and rain.

"Tomorrow and Friday we have highs in the 90s and then cooler weather is on the way for the weekend," Maze said. "Thursday's highs may be a couple of degrees cooler than today. This would not be record heat and neither would be the highs in the mid 90s on Friday."

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like a good weekend for outdoor Memorial Day fun. A chance of rain and thunderstorms will return on Saturday, with temperatures dipping into the low 80s. Temperatures will drop into the 60s on Sunday with cloudy skies and light rain likely.

"We have a 40% chance for showers and storms Saturday with a high in the lower 80s," Maze said. "On Sunday, we could have an overcast with some light rain and drizzle along with highs in the 60s. Right now we have 72 for the high but it's possible we may drop the number tomorrow. Monday as of right now is dry with a high in the 70s. The unofficial start of Summer will feel more like Spring!"
