The next round of wintry weather is expected to move into Western North Carolina starting Thursday.

It will come in the form of a wintry mix of rain and snow for many.

Snow will be more likely over higher elevations, where totals will likely be more significant.

A strong low-pressure system will cross the area Thursday through Friday. Cold temperatures across the mountains and the Interstate 40 corridor will likely interact with moisture from this system to produce accumulating snowfall, especially across the higher mountain elevations. Uncertainty is fairly high with this system, but there is the potential for a significant impact from accumulating snow across the region. Continue to monitor the latest forecasts over the next couple of days.

Periods of light snow will continue overnight across the higher elevations of the North Carolina mountains. With temperatures remaining below freezing, area roads above 3500 feet will maintain slick yet spotty snowpack and make for hazardous driving conditions through daybreak. Drivers are urged to use caution.
