USGS reports 1.6 magnitude earthquake Sunday morning in SC

A magnitude 1.6 earthquake was reported Sunday morning. This was the second earthquake to happen in the region within a few hours.

At 6:30 a.m., a 1.6 magnitude earthquake was reported three miles outside of Elgin, South Carolina, according to the South Carolina Emergency Management Division.

Multiple fault systems are running throughout South Carolina, causing the earthquakes to occur, per SCEMD.

The first earthquake to happen on July 3 was reported at 12:16 a.m., a 1.9 magnitude earthquake happened three miles outside of Elgin.

The South Carolina Emergency Management Division states South Carolina is a seismically active state.
