A Black Mountain woman was killed in a crash that closed Interstate 40 West near Patton Cove Road early Wednesday morning.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol said the wreck happened shortly before 8 a.m. near mile marker 59 in Buncombe County.

Authorities said Wanda Roland, 65, was traveling west on I-40 when her Chevy Equinox ran off the road to the right, overturned several times and hit the bridge support. Roland, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown from the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Roland was the only person in her vehicle.

After colliding into the bridge support, Roland’s vehicle traveled back into the interstate and hit another vehicle that was traveling westbound, authorities said. The driver of that vehicle was not injured.

All lanes reopened about 10:25 a.m.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation.
