Subject from hours long downtown negotiation makes first court appearance

New developments in the case of an alleged gunman, charged with barricading himself in a downtown Asheville apartment building over the weekend.

Communicating over video from the Buncombe County Detention Center, Ashley Dean Herny, 45, appeared before a judge Monday morning.

Herny is currently being held on a $100,000 bond, charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

Police say Herny shot a woman in the hand Saturday afternoon before barricading himself inside an apartment at the Altamont Apartments, refusing to surrender for more than seven hours.

Herny’s next scheduled court date is November 4, 2019.
