A popular West Asheville creek will get some upgrades to reduce pollution.

The state has awarded an $84,000 grant to pay for half the cost of repairing stream banks along Hominy Creek, which flows into the French Broad River.

The work will be done on property owned by the Center for Spiritual Living, which is working to raise the other $84,000 needed for the repairs. The project will to keep the banks of the church's parking lot from eroding into the water.

"Our plan is to get our parking lot back and to make repairs that we're told will be 95% effective," the center's Dr. John Waterhouse said.

The church hopes to start hiring contractors for the stream bank repairs in the next few days.

Another issue with Hominy Creek is bacteria. That will not be addressed by this project.
