A man who reportedly showed up at a Tennessee hospital and said he tried to kill his mother in North Carolina has been arrested.

Authorities in Nashville said Jack Walker, 27, had superficial scratches on his hands and said he tried to kill his mom and that she might be dead, WZTV reported. After police found Walker's mother's vehicle in the hospital parking garage with a bloody shirt in the passenger seat, they called the Polk County Sheriff's Office.

Polk County Sheriff Donald Hill said deputies performing a welfare check about 6 a.m. Wednesday in Mill Spring found the woman dead.

WZTV reported Cindy Walker was found with apparent trauma.

A man who knows the family was shocked by the news.

"It's hard to believe," Clint Blanton said. "When I hear of something like that happen, I just ... It's terrible."

"The officers were dispatched to the residence basically for health and welfare," Hill said.

That was when they found Cindy Walker dead in her home just down the road from Polk Central Elementary School.

"My first call was to the school and to say, 'Hey, this is what's going on, everybody is safe, there is nothing for the kids or parents to be worried about,'" Hill said.

The sheriff said Jack Walker and the vehicle he was driving will be returned to Polk County.

North Carolina authorities have sworn out a homicide warrant against Jack Walker, and he is being charged in Nashville with being a fugitive from justice, WZTV reported.

Hill, who did not seek re-election and will be leaving office in two weeks, asked the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation to handle the case.

"We're helping, but they've taken a major role in this investigation," he said.

Hill said he's asking the community to keep the families in their prayers.

"It's a bad situation. It doesn't matter how you look at it, its sad," the sheriff said. "I just hope everybody will pray for the family."
