Rutherford County authorities say person died after arriving at jail

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — Authorities said a person died Friday night after arriving at the Rutherford County jail.

The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office said a deputy initiated a traffic stop on Highway 221 South in Forest City, and the driver took off on foot. Jackie Israel Sanders, of Spartanburg, South Carolina, was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Rutherford County Detention Center.

Authorities said Sanders became unresponsive after arriving at the Rutherford County Detention Center. First aid was administered by detention officers until Rutherfordton Fire Department and Rutherford County EMS arrived on scene, but Sanders died.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate the death.

An autopsy will be conducted at Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem on Tuesday, Jan. 28.
