One person airlifted to hospital after crash shuts down part of I-26

Part of Interstate 26 near the Henderson/Polk County line was temporarily closed off Monday evening due to a crash.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) reported the crash happened just after 5 p.m., closing off I-26 Westbound at the time, two miles East of Exit 59.

A trooper with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) tells News 13 a tractor trailer and a vehicle collided Westbound, just inside the Polk County line.

The driver of the vehicle was airlifted to Mission Hospital and she was alert at the time, officials say.

The truck driver in the crash was charged with unsafe movement but was not injured.

The state trooper says both Eastbound and Westbound lanes were closed off for a time in order for Mission Hospital's Mountain Area Recovery Center (MAMA) to land.
