Authorities say icy road contributed to deadly Asheville crash

Asheville police confirm one person has died after a fatal crash on Riverside Drive occurred on Monday, Jan. 20, 2020.

Officials said at approximately 5:14 p.m. police responded to reports of a crash on Riverside Drive near the intersection of Hill Street in Asheville.

A vehicle traveling north on Riverside Drive crossed into the path of oncoming traffic and struck a second vehicle, operated by Guido Ernst Roth, 62, of Asheville, according to authorities.

Roth was transported to Mission Hospital and later succumbed to his injuries.

Asheville Fire Department reported around 5:54 p.m. on Jan. 20, that multiple subjects were trapped at 410 Riverside.

They said three subjects were involved in the accident and that the crash was a result of icy road conditions.

The Asheville Police Department's Traffic Safety Unit is conducting an ongoing investigation into this incident.
