NC COVID-19 update: Over 1,000 new cases within past 24 hours

As of Friday, May 29, 2020, North Carolina health officials say there have been a total of 26,488 lab-confirmed cases of the coronavirus in the state, that's up 1,076 cases from Thursday's report. Additionally, the state reports 859 virus-related deaths, 391,231 completed tests, and 680 hospitalized patients. 15,704 tests were completed by May 29.

State health officials said Monday there are 14,954 presumed recoveries in the state. Recoveries are updated on Mondays by 4 p.m.

  • Buncombe County: 299 cases, 23 deaths (County's last update is from May 28) (As of May 29, NCDHHS reports 310 cases)
  • Cherokee County: 30 cases, 1 death (As of May 18, 26 people have been released from quarantine. New cases reported by county, not reflected on NCDHHS website) (As of April 20, the county reports 17 cases are county residents and 2 cases are out-of-state individuals. Macon County

In the last 48 hours, Macon County Public Health (MCPH) reports 42 additional cases of COVID-19 have been identified, bringing the county's total to 63, as of May 29.

COVID-19 'CLUSTERS' REPORTED IN MACON COUNTY, INCLUDING ONE INN AND CHURCH

Of the latest 42 positive cases, the health department says they have identified a six-person cluster from Old Edwards Inn, located in Highlands.

The health department defines a 'cluster' of COVID-19 cases in workplace, educational, and other community settings as:

  • A minimum of five cases with illness onsets or initial positive results within a 14-day period AND
  • Plausible linkage between cases

Haywood County

On May 29, Haywood County reported its 48th case of COVID-19. Officials said the latest case is the first child under the age of 10. This individual is in isolation at home.

Officials said th individual resides in Haywood County with no recent out-of-state travel history. To protect individual privacy, no further information will be released.
