A CNN investigation has revealed explosive accusations of sex abuse against the head of an Asheville nonprofit.

CNN interviewed a former student of Eblen Charities director Bill Murdock, a woman who is speaking out for the first time because she and her family have watched in frustration as Murdock has gained admiration and influence in Asheville.

Murdock continues to deny he had sex with his then-student in the 1980s.

Shelley Love Baldwin, who still lives in the Asheville area, said the Murdock knew was her eighth-grade teacher who sexually abused her during her freshman year at Erwin High.

Murdock was charged with a felony sex crime in 1988 but pleaded guilty to misdemeanor indecent liberties with a 15-year-old girl. He resigned the day before he pleaded guilty.

Baldwin's family said in the CNN article they did not agree with Murdock's 1988 plea deal.

Murdock issued a statement after reviewing the CNN.com story.

“I have had the opportunity to review the CNN.com story. Thirty-one years I have not change (sic) the facts, and the allegations remain untrue,” he said. “I am grateful for the support of the board and so many in the community with whom I have worked to help those in times of need. I respect the family and only wish them well."

The Eblen Board of Directors also issued a statement.

"Eblen Charities has a standing board meeting scheduled this week. We are aware of the CNN article, are reviewing it and will discuss it at the meeting. Otherwise, we have no further comment at this time," the statement said.
