Missing 3-year-old boy found safe, grandmother found dead in Greenville County

GREENVILLE COUNTY, S.C. (WLOS) — The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office says a missing 3-year-old boy has been found safe but his grandmother was found dead.

On Wednesday, Bernett King, 60, and her grandson, Carter Bernhagen, were reported missing, last seen at around 11 a.m. The pair had left on a golf cart to visit a nearby creek and failed to return. Deputies used K9’s and Air Support to search for the pair throughout the day.

Just after 3 a.m. Thursday, authorities confirmed they had found the golf cart wrecked down an embankment on a wooded trail. King was found, unresponsive, in a wooded area near the wrecked cart. 3-year-old Carter was found safe near his grandmother.

In its report released Thursday, the Greenville County Coroner's Office says King died from a heart attack due to stress. Her time of death was listed as 1 p.m. on Wednesday. Additional details were not available pending an autopsy.
