Investigation underway after teen killed in Swain County campground fire

An investigation is underway in Swain County after a campground fire took the life of a teen Sunday night.

At approximately 11 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 29, 2020, a fire was reported in a camper in the Ela Campground.

'ARMED AND DANGEROUS' SUSPECTS TAKEN INTO CUSTODY AFTER HOURS LONG MANHUNT

Authorities say the fire spread to 9 different units with 7 of those being totally destroyed.

The Swain County Sheriff’s Office confirms Blake Lantz, 15, was killed in the fire. His brother was also injured but was able to escape. He was transported to Mission Hospital in Asheville and is expected to make a full recovery from his injuries.

Swain County officials confirm Blake Lantz was a student at Swain County High School. Grief counselors are on hand to help any students or staff in need.

Swain County Sheriff's Offices detectives and the NCSBI are on scene at this time to conduct a thorough investigation.
