A Hendersonville police officer shot a man in the shoulder after that man fled and pulled out a gun, according to investigators.

36-year-old Robert Gregory Robinson II faced multiple charges, and Ofc. Keenan Nesbitt remained on leave Monday evening.

On Monday, April 22, 2019, at approximately 12:23 a.m., the Hendersonville Police Department received a call from Hannah Flanagan’s at 300 N. Main Street. The caller said a man was displaying a handgun outside of the establishment.

Police said, when Ofc. Nesbitt responded, Robinson refused to cooperate and did not comply with instructions. At some point, Robinson fled the scene, running down 3rd Avenue and into Edwards Alley.

Nesbitt pursued Robinson on foot, and Robinson drew his firearm. Nesbitt then fired one round, striking Robinson.

Robinson dropped his firearm and continued to flee.

He was apprehended a short time later by assisting officers and transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Nesbitt was not harmed during the incident.

"It's quite out of character for our little town. It's normally very quiet and the police are walking the streets, but it's rarely anything at all. So, it's really out of character for us. I'm surprised," neighbor Michael Hall said.

Robert Gregory Robinson II is charged with possession of a stolen firearm, altering or removing a serial number from a firearm, and possession of a firearm by a felon.

North Main Street and Third Avenue were shut down for a period of time after the incident.

Authorities cleared the scene just after 6 a.m.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation and Hendersonville Police Department were looking into the case.
