Investigation underway after human remains found in wooded area of Old Fort

OLD FORT, N.C. (WLOS) — Investigators with the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office are on scene in Old Fort where human remains were discovered.

A release from the sheriff's office states an area resident found skeletal remains in a wooded area off Lavender Road Tuesday morning, Oct. 13.

The sheriff’s office was notified through a Crime Stoppers tip at 10:46 a.m., according to the release.

At this time, investigators are examining the scene and recovering the remains, which will be sent for autopsy to determine a positive identification.
