HENDERSON COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — Department of Transportation crews were investigating a pothole on an Interstate 26 ramp Wednesday when the pavement collapsed, DOT officials said.
The DOT's David Uchiyama said the collapse left a sinkhole about 15 feet deep on the Exit 54 ramp from I-26 westbound to U.S. 25 headed toward Greenville, S.C.
Officials immediately closed the road and established a detour for drivers: I-26 West to Exit 53, left on Upward Road to U.S. 176 West to U.S. 25 South.
DOT officials believe the problem is related to the drainage system for the interstate.
